About

I’m a writer and editor in San Francisco, the great city I’ve called home since 1994. My reporting and essays have appeared in publications including Salon (where I was an editor from 2003-2009), Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Arrive, PBS.org and Mother Jones, where I’m currently a senior editor. I’m also the associate director of MediaBugs. I have a MFA in Writing from University of San Francisco, periodically teach journalism and creative writing at San Francisco State University and 826 Valencia, and am on the advisory board of the Teacher Salary Project.
I write about a broad range of stuff. You can check out a cross section of my long-form journalism here. I also blog regularly on this site about politics, culture and media innovation. (At times I even include some original reporting, virtually none of it conducted while wearing pajamas.)
If you accidentally ended up here while searching for top-notch architectural and design services, you’re just one click away, courtesy of my lovely and extremely talented wife. Ditto, if you were looking for a soul-melting puppy photo. (His name is Renzo, and that back deck is his paradise… and OK, fine, since you insist, here’s one more of him in an epic pose.)
I welcome your comments, inquiries and greatest recipes. Feel free to send me e-mail. For additional links and thoughts, follow me on Twitter here. Thanks for coming by.

(Bonus links: I used to play bass for legendary California quartet The Magic of Television. And occasionally for the even more legendary I See Hawks in L.A., who you should definitely go see live without further delay.)
