About

mf1

I’m a writer and editor in San Francisco, the great city I’ve called home since 1994. My journalism has appeared in publications including Salon (where I was an editor for six years until late 2008), Rolling Stone, Mother Jones, Arrive and Der Spiegel. I am also the associate director and community manager of MediaBugs. I have a MFA in Writing from University of San Francisco, and periodically teach journalism and creative writing at SFSU and 826 Valencia.

My current focus is on the frontier of digital media. How I use this site is bound to evolve; for now I plan to write here frequently, with posts generally running at about 500 words. My interests range widely and I’ll navigate accordingly, as with the long-form journalism I’ve done.

As time and other projects allow, I’ll include some original reporting here. I believe the time is ripe for further innovation in producing reported content on the Web (at a time, not coincidentally, when there is much buzz about a declining newspaper industry), and self-publishing is one possible vehicle.

At the very least I hope to share some interesting ideas and information — the operative word being “share,” as much as intelligent and engaged readers visiting this particular venue are inclined to exploit the revolutionary interactivity of the medium. That is, I’d love to hear from any of you and get your ideas and insights as well. I’ll gladly respond to comments or questions in the open comment threads, or if you prefer you can send me an email. Thanks for reading!
